Terms and Conditions

  1. The applicant must be between 15 and 17 years of age when applying for the Award, and on the last day of the week-long creative writing retreat, Friday 12 July, 2024.
  2. To participate in the programme, you must reside and study on the island of Ireland.
  3. All work entered must be the applicant’s original work.
  4. The adjudicator’s decision will be final. No discussion will be entered into with any of the submitted applicants concerning the judges’ decision.
  5. Applicants must have email accounts to submit their work for consideration. MoLI will not accept written/postal applications. If you are having technical difficulties with the online registration system, please contact [email protected]. In the email, include your name, contact information, and the name and address of your school.
  6. Note to Parents/Guardians: In line with MoLI’s Child Protection and Welfare Policy, we cannot accept any work which does not give consent from a parent/guardian. This gives us consent to read the works from applicants and duly contact them regarding their submissions. During the selection process, jurors do not have access to the applicants personal information, whether submitted with an entry or otherwise.
  7. Applicants who submit works to the Award will retain any intellectual property rights they have in their works, including copyright. This means, for example, an applicant can submit the same work to other programs or contests, retain the work in a portfolio, and license it to others for non-exclusive publication.
  8. To run the Award, MoLI needs to be able to do certain things with the applicant’s works, such as copying, editing, and displaying them to process and judge submissions, award prizes, and publicise. To do these things, we need permission from the applicant. When an applicant submits work to the Award, the applicant permits MoLI to use that work in a wide variety of ways, without further permission or approval from the applicant as part of MoLI’s mission to promote creative self-expression among young people. Formally, this means the applicant grants MoLI a license to use, copy, change, publish, publicly perform, distribute, exhibit, or add to the work. This license is perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, and non-exclusive (with the right to sublicense). MoLI can use the work in any media, including online.
  9. The applicant also permits us to use their name, photograph or other image of themselves, biographical information, and live and taped interviews, appearances, or performances given or made by the applicant in connection with the Award, including promotion of the Edna O’Brien Young Writers Award.
  10. We will give the applicant credit when we use their submission in a public way unless there is a practical reason why we cannot, such as formatting, or if the work is being used in a medium where no individual credits are given. Also, if we mistakenly do not give the applicant credit in any given situation, if they let us know, we will try to correct that for similar uses in the future.
  11. We will not pay the applicant for their submission or our use of their submission.
  12. We may include the applicant’s work in our MoLI publications. We will not license their work to others to publish the work under their name for their own commercial gain.
  13. Materials Return We will not be able to return any work submitted for consideration.
  14. Copyright & Plagiarism All work submitted for the Award must be original, meaning the applicant creates the work, based on your own ideas. By submitting work to the Award, the applicant agrees that they created it and did not copy it from any other person, business, school, or organisation. Any work that infringes anyone’s intellectual property rights will be disqualified. The applicant, not MoLI, are responsible for getting any necessary consents or releases from people or for any places or property depicted in the applicant’s work.
  15. Violations MoLI may revoke an applicant’s participation in the Award and take back or cancel any awards made by us, if we determine that a submission does not meet the requirements of these Participation Terms or other applicable policies (for example, any policies that apply to participants from certain counties), or that an applicant has violated these Participation Terms or other policies in any other way. Any applicant whose award is taken back or cancelled may not identify themselves as the recipient of the Edna O’Brien Young Writers Award.
  16. If an applicant is selected as a participant in this Award (and agree to be) based on their application to the Award, these terms will also apply to the applicant’s participation in the programme. Additional terms for the Edna O’Brien Young Writers Award will be made available to the applicant if applicable.
    The Edna O’Brien Young Writers Award is committed to protecting the personal data of applicants and is delivered in line with the MoLI Privacy Policy.
