Eva Gore-Booth
93 Women Artists Inspired by her Life and Work
The life and work of Eva Gore-Booth provides the thematic backdrop for an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture at MoLI. Poet and playwright, suffragist, workers’ rights campaigner, social revolutionary, pacifist and lesser-known sister of Constance Markievicz, Eva Gore-Booth was born in Lissadell County Sligo 150 years ago.
The quest to shed more light on Eva Gore-Booth’s life, and draw popular cultural awareness to her legacy, has been championed by President Michael D. Higgins.
The President observed in his keynote address on Eva Gore-Booth in 2016, at Congress Hall London, that “… it remained of particular importance to me that adequate tribute be paid to Eva Gore-Booth as a remarkable, indeed quite extra-ordinary, figure, not just in Ireland’s Revolution, but also in the international trade-union, suffrage and peace movements of the last century, and yet one, whose memory has been somewhat obscured in orthodox Irish historiography.”
The exhibition is curated by Sligo’s Hamilton Gallery, which has run a significant series of ‘Invited Artists Exhibitions’ around the decade of commemoration, and has featured over 200 artists’ work as part of its gallery projects, in the last year alone.
