Freeman’s exhibition offers an artist’s guiding hand through one of the most important but least read works of literature of the last 100 years. “Ulysses is a novel that makes you work, but the pay-off is immense,” says Freeman.
“It’s densely layered with meaning, symbolism and humour; at once pedestrian, extraordinary, poignant, heroic and hilarious,” she says. “I feel Joyce designed Ulysses to work as much like a puzzle as a novel, making the text just sufficiently intelligible to engage the reader’s interest on first read, and tempt them into further engagement.”
